How to convert HEIC to JPEG

  1. 1

    Drop your HEIC files

Drag iPhone HEIC photos into CompressVault, or tap to pick them from your camera roll. One file or dozens — both work the same way.

  2. 2

    Select JPEG as output

Choose JPEG (or WebP / PNG) as the output format. Adjust quality if needed — 85% is a safe default that keeps photos looking sharp.

  3. 3

    Download converted files

Click download for individual photos, or grab the ZIP to get all your converted JPEG files in one go. Files saved directly to your device.

Zero uploads, zero tracking

CompressVault runs 100% in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never sent to any server — not even ours. No account required, no usage limits, no ads.

Why won't your iPhone photos open on a Windows PC?

Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads have saved photos in HEIC format by default. HEIC stores roughly twice as much detail per byte as JPEG, which is why your iPhone can fit thousands of photos without filling up. The catch is that HEIC is a relatively new container based on the HEVC video codec, and Windows, older Android phones, many email clients, most CMS upload forms and a long list of professional design tools either don't recognise the .heic extension at all or stumble when they try to decode it. The result is a photo that looks fine on your phone but refuses to open anywhere else.

The traditional fix has been to install a desktop converter, sign up for a cloud service, or change the iPhone's default format to JPEG and lose the storage benefits. CompressVault offers a third path: drop your HEIC files into a browser tab and convert them locally to JPEG, WebP, PNG or AVIF in seconds. There is no app to install, no account to create and no upload to wait for. The conversion uses the browser's built-in image decoding combined with the Canvas API to re-encode the pixels in whatever format the receiving system actually understands.

The best output format depends on where the photo is going. JPEG remains the safest choice for compatibility — every email client, social platform, photo printer and document editor handles it without question, and an 85 percent quality setting keeps the visual fidelity that made HEIC attractive in the first place. WebP is the smarter choice if the destination is a website or a modern messaging app, because it produces smaller files at the same quality. PNG is the right answer when you need to preserve transparency, although that is rare for camera photos.

HEIC files arrive straight from the camera roll with the same EXIF data as any other photo: GPS coordinates accurate to a few metres, the iPhone model and serial number, the exact date and time, even the orientation the device was held in. Sharing that information with strangers is rarely a good idea. Because CompressVault re-encodes through the Canvas API rather than copying the original file, every converted JPEG, WebP or PNG comes out clean — no GPS, no serial number, no timestamp. That happens automatically; there is no separate "strip metadata" step to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HEIC and why can't I open it on my PC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and later. It uses HEVC compression to produce smaller files than JPEG at the same quality. However, Windows and many older applications don't natively support HEIC, which is why conversion to JPEG is often necessary.

How do I convert HEIC to JPEG without installing an app?

Use CompressVault in your browser — no app or software needed. Drop your HEIC files into the compressor, select JPEG as the output format, and download the converted images. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Does HEIC to JPEG conversion reduce image quality?

A small amount of quality may be lost because JPEG uses lossy compression. However, at 85–90% quality settings, the difference is imperceptible at normal viewing sizes. CompressVault lets you control the quality level before converting.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG or WebP instead of JPEG?

Yes. CompressVault supports converting HEIC to JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF. Choose WebP for the best balance of compatibility and file size on the web.

Is HEIC conversion private? Are my iPhone photos uploaded?

Your iPhone photos are never uploaded. CompressVault converts HEIC to JPEG entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos remain on your device throughout the entire conversion process.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files to JPEG at once?

Yes. Drop as many HEIC files as you need — CompressVault converts them all in one batch and lets you download a ZIP with all the converted JPEG files.
